This project will set up a new supply chain of sugarcane for processing syrup to be converted into ethanol. This will reduce the risks associated with relying on molasses – a by-product of processing sugarcane into sugar – for the production of ethanol. To do this, 200 small-scale farmers will be provided with a reliable bulk water supply system to increase sugarcane yields. These farmers will also receive training and technical support looking at sugarcane production. By setting up the bulk water system, additional farmers who are currently not in the target group will also have access to a permanent source of water. A sugarcane mill and syrup-processing plant will be set up, generating revenue from sales of both ethanol and sugar. The project will create over 15 jobs across the value chain and increase the annual income of 200 sugarcane farmers.
