Working with a company in the Malawian horticulture sector, the MICF matching grant aims to increase the production of high value horticultural crops for the domestic market. As supermarkets in Malawi currently import fresh fruit and vegetables from South Africa, this project has the potential to directly contribute to import substitution. The project will establish an out grower contract farming scheme with an irrigation system, an extension program, and a pack house. An exclusive cool chain for value added products will be set up, and an anchor farm with green houses developed. The irrigation system will enable smallholder farmers to produce high value crops during periods of high demand. The production of horticultural crops will generate a 75% annual increase in incomes for the farmers and create 60 jobs throughout the value chain.
