This project aims to establish a seed multiplication program leading to the smallholder production and supply of high-quality disease-free potatoes. These potatoes will be processed as crisps and frozen french fries for sale in the retail market. This will be the first time that an aeroponics seed multiplication system has been commercially tested in Malawi. The company and its partner organisation will organise and provide technical training for 200 farmers, set up a processing centre and cold chain system, and set up an anchor farm for seed multiplication and the commercial production of potatoes. Through the production of french fries, this project will create a value added product for a locally grown commodity, and potentially contribute to import substitution, as it will compete with international brands in the domestic market. Moreover, the project will generate 250 new jobs and increase the annual income of the contracted farmers by over US$ 2,300.
